Neural subnetwork signatures distinguishing source and item memory retrieval: A meta-analysis of 66 fMRI studies

Description: This study investigated the intrinsic brain networks underlying source and item memory retrieval through a meta-analysis of 66 fMRI studies, with a focus on subnetwork-level distinctions within major intrinsic networks. Three key findings emerged. First, within the Frontoparietal Network, source memory retrieval elicited markedly stronger engagement of Subnetwork A than item memory retrieval, suggesting heightened demands on controlled processing during complex retrieval; Subnetworks B and C showed minimal or no differences. Second, within the Default Mode Network, item memory retrieval—but not source memory retrieval—significantly engaged Subnetworks A and B, consistent with a more vivid or coherent subjective recollection experience during simpler tasks; Subnetwork C showed no significant involvement. Third, within the Ventral Attention–Salience Network, source memory retrieval selectively recruited Subnetwork B more than item memory retrieval, possibly reflecting increased demands on response coordination; Subnetwork A showed no significant differences. These findings offer new insights into the distinct neural mechanisms supporting different forms of episodic memory retrieval and highlight the value of subnetwork-level analyses in isolating the dynamic processes that support memory.
